Your Accident Checklist

Most of us who drive with any frequency have been in a car accident. Adrenaline runs high, sometimes tempers flare, injuries occur, not to mention dealing with the inconvenience of it all. It is not a pleasant experience. Taking care of some key items immediately after the accident can help to avoid even more problems down the road. Here is a checklist of things you can do to protect yourself and minimize problems if you are in a car accident.
1. Immediately stop at the scene of the accident. If possible, move your vehicle to a safe location.
2. Call 911 if there have been any injuries to yourself, your passengers or the other driver.
3. Call the police to report the accident. Not every accident will require the police to visit the scene but making the call is a safeguard in case you are accused of any foul play. If the accident was a hit and run try to get any information you can about the other car (license plate, make, model, color).
4. Ask for the other driver's license and insurance information. Check to make sure their information is valid.
5. Obtain the names, addresses, phone numbers and statements from any other passengers or witnesses.
6. Use a camera to photograph the auto damage to your car and any other vehicles or property involved.
7. If you hit a parked car or a similar type of accident occurred where the owner cannot be located, leave a note on the damaged car with your contact information.
8. Notify your insurance company immediately. It may be tempting to avoid a higher insurance quote but honesty is the best policy.
9. In some states it is illegal to not report the accident if there has been an injury or damage exceeds $750.00. Your license could even be suspended.
Most importantly, keep your cool. Accidents happen.
