What You Should Avoid When Buying a Car

What to Avoid

Most people have a pretty good idea of the car they want to buy before they even step foot in the showroom. They have seen it whiz past them on the highway, or read about it in a magazine ad or the neighbor has one in their driveway. Whatever the case may be, buying a new car is an exciting prospect. Car salesmen are well aware of this fact. They can see the gleam in your eyes as you spot 'the one'. If only it were so easy.

  • Stay openminded. When you start the car hunt be ready to have your heart broken. The car that looks so hot may not handle that well. The car that everyone has and you don't want may actually have some great attributes (why everyone has one).
  • Test drive. Looks aren't everything. Always take advantage of the test drive. The seat may be comfortable while lounging in the showroom but working the gas pedal and steering can shed new light on the car's ergonomics. After all, you won't be sitting in the car in a showroom after you buy it.
  • Know the price. The sticker price is not the dealer price. Know that the dealer paid for the car and work up from there. That sticker on the window is designed to sell the thing, not to get you a good deal.
  • Finance first. Understand that the dealership can make money from your finance package. Research available financing options before you buy a new car to avoid scams.
  • Don't skimp. Some great technological advancements have been made such as anti-lock braking systems and stability control features. These features have been proven to save many lives and may do the same for you.

Most importantly, don't forget to breathe in that new car smell.
