No More Manuals

As United States auto companies struggle to become more environmentally conscious by manufacturing more fuel efficient models, Chrysler has done them one better. Replacing the paper manual with a DVD is the company's effort to reduce paper use and also free up space in drivers' glove boxes. According to Chrysler, swapping out DVDs for paper will save 930 tons of paper annually, or, 20,000 trees. In addition, the move will save the car manufacturer over a million dollars.
The DVD media provides some advantages that a paper manual cannot. For example, video tutorials are available providing step by step instruction. Color photos provide more detail than the traditional black and white. Instruction on how to handle typical roadside emergencies is also covered on the DVD. One issue raised by critics of the DVD manual is how to access the DVD during a roadside emergency if a laptop is not available. For those who are not yet up to speed with the digital age, a paper manual can be ordered from Chrysler, as well.
Searching the manual has become as easy as typing in your query and pressing ENTER on your keyboard. The DVD media has also allowed Chrysler to increase the complexity of the manual while maintaining ease of navigation. For those who lose the DVD or don't have access to their copy an online version will be available. Additionally, a printer guide can help to capture the relevant sections of the manual in case a printed version is desired.
Fuel efficiency is one way to save the environment, but Chrysler has proven that decreased emissions aren't the only way auto manufacturers can do their part to protect the environment.
