Manufacturer Warranties

A manufacturer warranty is typically only extended when buying a new car. In order to get a warranty on a used car an extended warranty is usually the way to go. The manufacturer warranty is less comprehensive and may vary depending on the car manufacturer. These offers have been known to change along with the manufacturer's desire to sell cars. A better warranty usually means more sales. So what does the manufacturer warranty usually cover?

Powertrain
A basic manufacturer warranty will cover the Powertrain, or Drivetrain. This includes the major vehicle components such as the engine, transmission, drive shaft and drive axles. Items that suffer normal wear and tear like hoses and belts are normally not covered. Most manufacturers offer at least a three year warranty on the powertrain.

Rust/Corrosion
While rust can occur on the surface of the car, most manufacturer warranties protect against rust or corrosion making its way all the way through the body of the car. Regular washing and waxing can help to minimize rust and corrosion.

Roadside Coverage
Nowadays, roadside coverage is commonly included with a manufacturer warranty. This would include services such as accessing the car when you lose your key, dealing with a dead battery and running out of gas. Be sure to inquire about this coverage as you may also be paying for it in your auto insurance policy.

Comparing different manufacture warranties is useful when shopping for a new car. If you are on the fence it might make the difference when you decide to sign on the dotted line.
